If you manage multifamily or commercial properties and you have started shopping for building level water monitoring, WaterSignal is probably on your list. It has been one of the most recognized names in the category for over a decade, particularly in apartments and healthcare facilities.
Since Metron-Farnier acquired WaterSignal in July 2023, the product now sits inside a much larger metering organization, and the buying experience has changed along with it. That has left a lot of property teams asking a reasonable question: what are the current WaterSignal alternatives, and how do they actually compare?
The short version
Both products do the same core job. They attach to the water meter you already have, count usage without any plumbing work, send the data over cellular, and alert you when something looks wrong. Neither one requires WiFi, and neither one requires cutting a pipe.
The differences come down to four things: data resolution, installation friction, hardware options when the meter is uncooperative, and what kind of company you want behind the product.

1. Data resolution and how fast you see it
This is the biggest practical difference, and it is worth understanding before you compare anything else.
WaterSignal's published materials describe viewing consumption "by the month, day or even down to the hour," with hourly and daily alert levels. Hourly data is genuinely useful. It will catch a broken main, a stuck irrigation valve, or a month over month creep in consumption.
What hourly data struggles with is separating overlapping events. In a 100 unit building, an hour of data is one number that contains every shower, every toilet, every washing machine, and whatever is leaking. You can see that the hour was high. You often cannot see why.
The NOWi Meter Monitor records minute by minute usage and uploads on a 15 minute cycle by default, which can be tightened to every minute when you need rapid feedback. At minute resolution, the shape of usage becomes readable. A running toilet shows up as a flat baseline that never returns to zero. Irrigation shows up as a repeating block at the same time each morning. A burst shows up as a step change that does not stop.
Resolution is only half of it. The second number to ask any vendor about is upload frequency, because that is what determines how quickly the data reaches you. In the deployments we have seen, WaterSignal data reaches the portal on a daily cycle. NOWi uploads every 15 minutes by default. Those are different products in practice: a burst that starts at 9 PM is something you are reacting to before midnight in one case and the following day in the other. Wherever a system runs on a daily cycle, a 1 gallon per minute leak puts roughly 1,400 gallons through the building before anyone is told.
That shape is what makes triage fast. Instead of telling a maintenance tech "Tuesday was high, go look around," you can tell them "usage never dropped below 2 gallons per minute after 11 PM Tuesday, start with the toilets on the risers that were serviced last week." If you have ever chased a silent toilet leak or a phantom irrigation cycle, you know how much time that saves.
Minute data also gives you repair certainty. When a tech replaces a flapper, the baseline drops within minutes and you can confirm the fix before they leave the property. With hourly data on a daily upload, confirming a repair means waiting until the next day and then reading it out of an hourly average.
2. Alerting: thresholds versus behavior
Most water monitoring systems, WaterSignal included, are built around threshold alerts. You set an hourly or daily gallon ceiling and get notified when usage crosses it. That works well for catastrophic events.
The problem with pure thresholds is that they miss the expensive slow leaks. A 1 gallon per minute leak in a busy building never crosses a daily threshold set for a busy building. It just quietly adds up to a lot of gallons over a few months, which is exactly the category of waste that shows up in most of the portfolios we survey.
Because NOWi has minute level data, the dashboard can alert on behavior instead of just volume. A continuous usage alert fires when flow never returns to zero for a set number of hours, regardless of whether the total is high. That single alert type catches the leaks that thresholds are structurally incapable of catching. You still get threshold, spike, and off hours alerts on top of it.
3. Installation friction and who does the work
WaterSignal has always been a service led product. A technician comes out, mounts the device at the meter, and calibrates it to that specific meter. That model has real advantages. It is hands off for your team and the calibration is verified by someone who does it every day. Under Metron, that field service organization is larger than it was before.
The tradeoff is scheduling. Every device, every battery swap, and every relocation is a truck roll that has to be coordinated between your staff, the vendor, and often the utility. Across a portfolio, that coordination is frequently the slowest part of a rollout.
NOWi took the opposite approach. The Meter Monitor mounts to the existing meter with no tools and no plumbing, and it ships with a prebuilt configuration library covering common utility meter models. Instead of sending photos of your meter to a vendor and waiting for a custom calibration, you select the meter model and the device is configured. In most cases your own maintenance team can install it, or a NOWi partner can. There are partners across the country if you would rather not touch it.
For a single building this is a minor difference. For a 40 property portfolio it is the difference between a rollout measured in weeks and one measured in quarters.
4. What happens when the meter will not cooperate
Every meter based monitoring product has the same limitation. It has to read something from the meter, whether that is a pulse output, a magnetic signature, or an encoded protocol. Some meters, especially older or unusual ones, do not offer anything readable. Some utilities will not permit an attachment at all.
When that happens with a metering vendor, the usual answer is to install a new meter, which means a plumber, a shutdown, and a permit conversation. Metron is well positioned to do exactly that, since meters are their core business. If you were going to replace aging meters anyway, this is a legitimate advantage rather than a workaround.
If you do not want to open a pipe, NOWi's answer is a different sensor. The Pipe Monitor uses ultrasonic sensing to read flow through the outside of the pipe, with no meter involvement at all. For applications that need certified accuracy, a clamp on ultrasonic meter can be paired with the same monitoring platform. The same dashboard, alerting, and reporting apply regardless of which sensor is reading the water.
That flexibility matters most in mixed portfolios where the meters are not standardized, and in applications like cooling towers where you may want makeup and blowdown measured separately.
5. Hardware and connectivity
The NOWi hardware is a newer generation. It is physically smaller, rated for wet meter pits, and specified for up to 7 years of battery life, which for most properties means install it and forget it rather than scheduling battery service. It runs on cellular IoT, so there is no WiFi, no gateway, and no IT ticket. We have also written about how we use the Helium IoT network alongside cellular for coverage in difficult locations.
WaterSignal is also cellular and also avoids WiFi, so on connectivity the two are comparable. The difference is form factor, environmental rating, and how often someone has to physically visit the device.
6. The dashboard
Some of this is subjective, so weigh it against your own demo. WaterSignal's portal is an older interface built around consumption charts and hourly and daily alert configuration, and it covers those basics.
The most common complaint we hear about it is speed. Pages are slow to load, and moving between properties or changing a date range means waiting on each view to render. On one building that is a minor annoyance. If someone on your team is reviewing twenty properties on a Monday morning, it becomes the reason the review stops happening.
NOWi's dashboard was built more recently and around higher resolution data, so it leans toward fast analysis: overlaying periods, drilling from a month into a single minute, comparing buildings across a portfolio, and exporting the raw series without a wait. If your team wants to do actual analysis rather than just receive alerts, this is where the gap is most visible. Where WaterSignal and Metron are the better choice
There are situations where we would tell you to look at them seriously, and it would be dishonest to write a comparison that pretends otherwise.
You need unit level submetering. This is the clearest case. Metron's core business is submetering and AMI, including reading individual apartments and handling resident billing. NOWi does not do unit level billing. If your goal is to bill residents for their own consumption under a submetered program, that is Metron's home turf and you should talk to them.
You want one vendor for meters and monitoring. If you are already replacing meters, consolidating meter supply, installation, reading, and leak monitoring with a single company has real operational value.
You want fully managed service with a large field team. NOWi offers full service installation and works with partners nationwide, but Metron has been building a service and contracting organization for far longer and it is larger. If your portfolio is spread across many markets and you want a single national crew handling everything, weigh that seriously.
Where NOWi is the better choice
You want to diagnose, not just get alerted. Minute by minute data with 15 minute or faster uploads is a different tool than hourly summaries. If your team is going to act on the data, resolution is the thing that determines how quickly they can act.
You are cost sensitive or covering a lot of buildings. Lower hardware and program cost per building means monitoring marginal properties that would not justify a full service contract. Across a portfolio, that usually means finding more leaks, simply because you covered more meters. The ROI math on water monitoring is driven almost entirely by coverage.
You have capable maintenance staff. If your techs can hang a device on a meter, you skip vendor scheduling entirely and deploy on your own timeline.
Your meters are not standardized. A vendor with meter monitors, pipe monitors, and clamp on ultrasonic options can cover the odd buildings without opening a pipe.
You want modern alerting. Continuous usage detection catches the slow, expensive leaks that threshold alerts are built to ignore.
The honest summary
WaterSignal built a good product and a real category. Under Metron it is now part of a larger metering and submetering company, which makes it a stronger option for portfolios that need submetering and full service, and a heavier option for portfolios that just want visibility into building level water use.
NOWi is the newer, lighter, higher resolution alternative. Minute by minute data, near real time uploads, install it yourself, more sensor types for difficult buildings, and lower cost so you can cover more of your portfolio. We do not submeter units. NOWi is lean and family run, which means when something needs attention you get a person who knows your buildings on the phone, not a ticket in a queue.
Both beat the status quo of finding out about a leak when the water bill arrives 45 days later.
